What Can the ChatGPT Chrome Extension Do Now?

October 17, 2026 ยท Watch the 3-minute video or read the short version below

The short version
  • ChatGPT can now use your Chrome tabs. In Chat it reads across your open tabs and gathers what you need, so you stop copying and pasting.
  • In Work, it can act. It can send messages, fill out forms, download files and group your tabs, all inside your browser, under your name.
  • Let it gather and fill. Keep the last click. Close the tabs it doesn't need, end every Work request with "stop before submitting," and check two source links before you trust its numbers.

What it could do before

Until now, ChatGPT only saw what you pasted in. Picture a shop owner (an illustrative example) with three supplier tabs open. She copies a price from the first tab and pastes it into ChatGPT. Copies the next one. Pastes again. Then she types the order form herself, one field at a time.

ChatGPT could help her think, but every bit of information had to pass through her clipboard, and every click was hers.

What OpenAI changed on October 15

On October 15, 2026, OpenAI upgraded the ChatGPT extension for Chrome. In its own words, it is "bringing the power of computer use to anyone who uses Chrome." You install the extension, then in the ChatGPT web or desktop app you tag Chrome, and ChatGPT can use your open tabs. OpenAI says the extension is available on all ChatGPT plans.

It works in two modes, and the difference between them is the whole story.

Chat reads. Work acts.

Chat looks across your open tabs and gathers information. OpenAI's own example prompt is a good one for any business: "Put the vendors in these tabs into my comparison sheet, with pricing, key features, and source links." That is the copy and paste job, done for you.

Work goes further. Here ChatGPT can control your Chrome tabs: send messages, fill out forms, download files, and tidy a pile of tabs into groups. Back to the shop owner: she asks it to fill in the supplier's order form "and stop before submitting." That is OpenAI's wording too. It types every field, then waits at the button for her.

That saves real time on quotes, forms and supplier research. But it is now clicking in your browser, on sites where you are already signed in, under your name.

Where KiS lands: yes, let ChatGPT gather information and fill in drafts. Keep the final Send or Submit as your own click. One wrong message to a customer, or one wrong order, costs more than the minutes you saved.

Three habits to keep it safe

HabitWhat to do
1. Close the tabs it doesn't needBefore you tag Chrome, close anything unrelated. Your bank and your inbox don't belong in a supplier search.
2. Keep the last clickEnd every Work request with "stop before submitting." Let it fill the draft, then you read it and press Send or Submit yourself.
3. Check the source linksBefore you trust a comparison sheet, open two of the source links it gave you and make sure the price matches the page.

Let ChatGPT do the copying and the typing. Keep the last click for yourself. Keep it simple.

Why this matters if you run a business

AI is moving from answering questions to doing things for you, inside the same browser where you pay bills and talk to customers. That is useful, but only when you decide which parts it is allowed to finish. Start with the boring, repeatable work like gathering quotes and filling forms, and keep the decisions. And the better your AI knows your business, the fewer mistakes it makes, so start with why AI needs a second brain to be useful.
